You know. The more I look at this album cover, the more I'm starting to embrace it. I respect Drake for embracing the meme culture cause that's been his winning formula in the past years. He gets the people talking whenever he does shit like this, from his wacky music videos to whoever he's beefing with, and so much more. However, I've got to a point with Drake's music, Where I feel like he's getting too comfortable. Don't get me wrong, it is working for him. With an album from the weird cover art to name and that silly haircut of his, I thought he would've taken more of a risk. To me, this album felt like just a giant meme and a standard Drake album. However, I ended up liking this album more than I thought I would.
The main issue I had with this album, as his rival, is it's way too long. This whole new era of music where every album is either long to boost streaming numbers is still annoying. Don't expect to break down every track on here. I think what I like about this album is most of Certifed Lover Boy, There are these Drake tracks I love, and for most of the album, we have these types of songs. Songs like Champagne Poetry, Papi's Home, Love All, 7am On a Bridle Path, and The Remorse, I dig these types of tracks. Whenever dude raps on these sample-heavy, filtered, moody chipmunk vocals, I just love it. It's just Drake sitting in a dark room, spitting his shit and talking about his personal life. 7am On a Bridle Path he takes aims at Kanye, He had some good lines here. I thought the Gildan line, I've heard so many different variations of "I'm going to kill you so they can make a RIP shirt of you" but I still love those types of bars. Papi's Home is a goofy-ass song. Gave me vibes of a Roman Reigns, looking down on the other competition, and how they should call him daddy now. I thought at first it was about artists who sound like but in a way, it can be interpreted in that context too.
Way 2 Sexy, man I love this song. Mention this earlier on how Drake embraces the meme culture, this is a good example of how he does a great job at that. I love the music video with Kawhi dancing like that one Boy II Men video. No Friends In The Industry has Drake rapping about he doesn't want any more friends and he's content with the people he's around since he has been public enemy number one in recent years. Production is nice, samples a three-six mafia track. Knife Talk with 21 Savage and Project Pat is a solid track. 21 and Drake got great chemistry, I don't think it would happen but if they did an album together, I want to hear it. He's not from the south but I like it when Drake pays homage to the southern hip-hop scene with respect and care.
Yebba's Heartbreak doesn't feature the man himself but I thought this was a nice showcase for Yebba. I'm not familiar with her work but good job. I love her vocals and I will plan to check out more of her stuff in the future. Fountains with Tems the first time I was fine with the boy hopping on the afrobeat wave. Mainly cause Drake was barely on the track and let just Tems be the spotlight and focus. Helps too he didn't use a fake accent, I hate when he does that shit. IYM2 with Kid Cudi??? I am shocked these two are cool again. It's a fine song but with all the drama they had years ago, crazy to think about. TSU was a leaked track that's been around in the past year, I'm glad it made the cut. I know there is controversy with R.Kellu getting writing credit, 40 did put a statement, saying he had to do with OG Ron C on the outro having an R Kelly track play in the background. Personally, they could've reworked this part of the track but we digress.
Girls Want Girls is up there being Drake's worst in his entire catalog. Lil Baby's verse was fine but with the idea of the song and some of the cringe bars, I couldn't mess with this track. "Say that you a lesbian, girl me too" line, it's some shit you say in middle school. Not corny or cheesy, just bad. In the Bible would be better if he didn't use the vocal effects. I like the theme of the track on paper. Talking about being judged about his past and how some girls claim to be into religion but his verse wasn't that good. Durk and Giveon, I've heard better from both of them. Pipe down I didn't care much at all, the other song with Future was whatever and the Ty Dolla track didn't leave up to my exceptions.
CLB, while it's a typical Drake album I've heard from him in the past years, I still think it's his best project that was labeled as an album in quite some time. Drake could've taken that risk and go out all with the name and cover but I am fine with what we got. I'm holding out hope we do get that R&B album from the boy. One Day.
