I'm gonna keep it real, the year of 2020 for music was whatever. Wasn't too many bad albums this year to be fair. I felt this year didn't have that album of the summer, mainly cause of covid. Big-name artists album delayed their projects to next year cause well, can't do much of a promo or tour with everything going on. In my personal opinion, a few albums just came and went, forgotten about by next week. Don't get me wrong, I will have bad albums to name but, I want to do things differently. I won't rank em, most just want to talk about the ones that not only were bad but also the ones that came and went or disappointed me.
Lil Boat 3 by Lil Yachty This will piss off a few of my mutuals that this on the list but at least give me my reason. I don't think Lil Boat 3 is horrible, I was honestly let down by this album. Yachty would be my pick of the best-featured artist. All these tracks he did with all the Detroit rappers he's been killing it. When I heard he was working on a Detriot theme album, I was hyped but......we got this instead. This by far the weakest album in the Lil Boat saga. I think there were two, maybe three tracks I was playing on repeat. Outside of that nothing stood out to me. I was pretty bored during its for almost one hour, 19 track run time. He did release a deluxe version land most of the deluxe version tracks were better than the standard edition tracks. I think he if cut the fat and add the deluxe version tracks, this album would be better but sadly it wasn't. I am still hopeful for the Detriot mixtape but if that doesn't deliver, I have given up hope for Lil Yachty. *Fingers Crossed*
Changes by Justin Bieber
When looking back for the year 2020 of music, Someone mentioned this man here and I suddenly went "Oh yeah! he did drop an album this year!", My nightmares have returned. It's very cliche to shit on this dude, as the person, and the artist. His album he dropped five years ago, I thought it was fine, nothing special but fine. Album is bland and bad to put it nicely. The rollout for this album was funny though, I remember he was telling his own fans to buy VPNs to boost sales for the first single Yummy to chart number one. It failed miserably, Yummy is up there for one of the worst songs of the year, the hook is just so lifeless. The writing on this entire project is strange and lazy at the same time. The sounds, themes, and aesthetic are overall bland. Vocally he was fine on a few tracks but it didn't help the album. Features on this range from bad to disappointing. Travis phoned it in on his verse like he did with most of his work this year. I was hopeful for this album I'll admit since he's much older and maybe he will change his sound, hence the title but man. This wasn't it at all.
High Off Life by Future
Future each year when he drops projects, one is good and one is that is not good. I think you know where this is going. There isn't too much to say on this one. I never went back and listen as much since the release, it started and ended very weak, and quite honestly, it's up there as one of the weaker albums in his catalog. The one song that did stand out was the track with Uzi, which spawned the collab album between the two. Solid album from them too in case if you're wondering. I was questioning myself if I was burned out by Future sound and aesthetic, especially how annoying and obnoxious his fans are. I don't think that's the case, we just got another weak Future album, he's still got it in him to give us great material. This just wasn't the album to give us that really.
ADHD by Joyner Lucas
Joyner an odd artist to me. That good technical rapper that got the basic skills down to perfection. To be honest, he the best overall rapper on this list, His viral videos are interesting to watch, and his freestyles on radio shows are always fantastic. Far as his music itself, I am not a huge fan. He doesn't click with me. Joyner is one of the better "lyrical" that I heard or seen whenever I scroll through social media, but he doesn't do anything for me. What didn't help either was like half of the album were tracks that he dropped like two, even three years ago? The skits are very awkward on this album too. The whole theme is him growing up with ADHD and he's been interviewed by a doctor and it doesn't help the album, makes it less enjoyable. There's one point where he offers Joyner as a youth like drugs and calling him shit I don't want to repeat. The main issues I have on this entire flawed and failed theme project are the hooks are weak, production is bad, nothing is original, copying other rappers sounds and flows which is very ironic as hell. When he tells stories he just drags on and on and doesn't engage me. it's fucking boring. I wasn't hyped for "ADHD" but I can't believe he worked on this album for YEARS and this is what we got.
Pegasus by Trippie Redd
......What happened to Trippie Redd? When he first came onto the scene, I was intrigued by how good he was as a rapper and his odd singing voice, goofy too. Since last year he has regressed and gotten worse and worse. The concept on Pegasus is about love and romance, there is an attempt at that but it's not good. It's 75 minutes and 26 tracks deep, why? The mixing on this is just laughably bad. Vocals and production are mixed with the cheapest mixer you can buy at the local thrift store. Everyone is rapping on a drive-thru speaker or cheap Bluetooth headphones from far away. Speaking of the guest features, there bad. No one fits the whole theme or want to be there for the project besides Young Thug. Trippie bites and rip-offs people like Future and Carti sounds like reference tracks for said artist. Trippie's not known to be a great lyrical artist but we got some of his worst writing and hooks on this one. One of the tracks hook is just him going "WEEEEEEEEEEEEE!" like the fuck? It justs exposed how bad he is and to me, not care anymore. It's such a struggle to even find or say anything positive about this record. At this point, I'm not a fan of Trippie anymore. If we going to keep getting albums and mixtapes with no effort or care, then why should I care about what he does next?
3.15.20 by Childish Gambino
The anticipation of what Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino was gonna do next after the release of "This Is America" was high. I enjoyed most of Glover's work when it comes to music, I know he does have a fair share of criticism from what I have seen over the past year but I agree to disagree with those takes. This was a surprise drop on his website and removed the next day, released officially everywhere the week after. So I was pretty excited to hear this one since, at the time, this was his final album he was ever going to release. But, I was let down by this one. Most disappointing album for me in 2020.
I give him respect for trying new sounds and being more experimental than his last record but it doesn't do anything, didn't click with me. The album starts off rough but I did have hope it was going to get better after hearing the track "12.38" with 21 Savage. 21 carried the track to be fair but Gambino did his thing, he does cartoonish but he's having a great time. The background vocals and dreamy production are a nice touch, it's the best song on this one. After this track, Album doesn't get worse but I felt like the tracks could've been stronger. Production carries the album, however, the production can be a bit shotty and mixed weird."32.22" is when you mix lo-fi with Kanye's "Yeezus", the song just gave me a fucking headache every time I heard it. "39.28" Donald is doing best Queen impression, It starts off ok but just ends underwhelming. "42.26" aka Feels like Summer was a single before this album, I still love the track but the album version is mixed different and I am indifferent to the change, don't hate it but should've been left alone and stayed as-is.
Album does end strong but I wanted to really like this, sadly I didn't. Also, few people I know didn't remember this dropped this year which doesn't surprise me, the world fell apart after this came out. I am still a fan of Donald Glover and I am still going to tune in what he does with music, Tv, and movies. Just hoping I don't get let down again.
New Beginnings by Reason
TDE one of my favorite labels, with a great crop of rappers and singers. 2020 was quiet for TDE, they had a pretty underwhelming fan week, and it seems like most of em have their albums finished but due to covid it was put to a halt. One artist however did release that album for the label, but it wasn't the one that the people wanted. Fans are begging for new albums from SZA to Isiah to Kendrick so I don't know why we got this. TDE promoted this album longer than it needed to be, Personally, this album should've been pushed back to give it more time to improve. Reason is an alright rapper, sure he wears his influence on his sleeve but he's not bad. Here, however, you can definitely hear the influence and I rather hear the influence music itself than Reason. What's worse and even sad is when Reason is trying his best to engage me and here comes a feature from fellow TDE artists and others that outshines him. Reason is the cheap great value cereal awhile we have Schoolboy, Rapsody, and Vince Staples are the named brand cereal. Concepts and themes were just cliche and hear many times, beats are weak, bars range from to bland and questionable, I don't know what to else. Nothing stuck with me. This man has a well-known big label and connections behind him, you would think he uses that to his advantage but he doesn't. Overall the album did nothing and I don't get the appeal of Reason right now.
Daystar by Tory Lanez
Fuck Tory Lanez. Lock his ass up for what he did to Megan. Can't believe he had the audacity to even release this. Bum.
Find The Beat by Blueface
It is baffling, funny, and sad how much Blueface has fallen off. When he first burst through the scene being a viral/meme sensation, he was tolerable at best. His weird offbeat flow was interesting and funny enough that I could get a laugh at. I am used to rappers rapping very offbeat on tracks, most of em got personality, energy, and funny lines to keep me engaged. However, with this album, this still straight fucking trash. You can tell this man just not gives a fuck and proves anybody can be a rapper at this point. The beat selection sounds like type beats with less than 1000 views on youtube, bars are unfunny and bad, and not even the features can carry the album to make me say nothing nice about this album. The track "Carne Asada" is up there with the most stereotypical and racist shit I heard since Hopsin's "Happy Ending". He puts on this fake Mexican accent for his flow and it pisses me off a lot. This whole album just gave me bad memories of going to parties and dudes freestyling in-ear and making no damn sense at all. Don't surprise this album bombed and he's struggling to keep relevance by doing these odd stunts he was doing in the summer. I didn't rank the albums this year but this is my pick for the worst album of 2020.
