The Big Day by Chance The Rapper

A lot can change in three years and sometimes change is good for some but for others like this man here, not good. Crazy to think that Chance The Rapper "Coloring Book" was my first review ever on this blog, awhile I really liked that album "Coloring Book" was the album people turned on Chance. Artists do have to evolve at times and their entire sounds are totally different from their work but when compare "10 Days" or "Acid Rap" to Coloring Book" it sounds like a different person. Chance can be a huge cornball but it doesn't feel forced, he seems like a nice guy despite some reports say (Please don't send the goons after me after this review), and yeah people have said it doesn't feel genuine that he has changed and only 'sold out" but we all gotta sell out one time in our lifetime. Chance's debut album or "OWBUM" is finally here so is it good?

Hell no. In most of my reviews, I would break things down the track by track but like this album, I don't wanna bore you. Indiffernt, Incorhernt, and Inconsistent are the three I's (Shout out Kurt Angle) I would give this entire record. Another word I would give this is confused, cause what was his whole approach to this project? I mean sure the summer church camp kids can listen to this or the whole family can play this on the way to the lake as someone I saw said. The songs are way too pop-rap and happy for my taste, sounds like those raps songs you hear on those pop radio stations and maybe they will play some rap like this cause it's "safe".

Another thing that weighs this album down is the length, 22 tracks?! are you serious?! I thought we were past that mini era of long-ass albums and the only reason it is long cause we need those streaming numbers to be high! If the album was 12-14 I still wouldn't think I would enjoy this album, not even a little.

If I had to praise the album for a couple of things I would the features do stand out more than Chance. DaBaby, Megan, Smino, Ari Lennox, Gucci, and even Nicki did a much better job and outshine Chance on his own album. Production at times can be spotty and forgettable but there are a few that stand out. Songs that have more introspective like "Eternal" and "We Go High" do their job and stand out but when have songs that are corny/cheesy and his vocals being annoying like "Hot Shower", "The Big Day" "Handsome" and "Let's Go On The Run" it becomes too much of a headache and chore to listen.

Final thoughts on this album, this ain't it chief. With the lazy verses, cheesy/corny moments, terrible vocals, and length time alone make this album up there with the worst also very disappointing albums of the year. I really wanted to go into this album and enjoy it and come out of it and say "Wow Chance what a great debut album!" but alas I did not. Even If I was in a happier mindset I still wouldn't enjoy this at all, I'm not sure where Chance goes next but I'm hoping he doesn't fall off the wagon like his friend Vic Mensa. I wish it was 2016 again, good times for both men.
