Hola Everyone, its been awhile. I haven't posted a review on here in a month or so due to my recent promotion (that is in the works), getting more hours, and dealing with personal issues, but I am back! This is something new I wanted to do for quite some time since I haven't had that much time to sit down and write a full one album review. Rob's Rapid Fire Reviews will be pretty much bunch of short albums reviews in one post, Either a paragraph or could be just a sentence. This won't be a weekly or bi-weekly but I will do my best to post frequently with this new concept I am doing. Thanks for reading and let me know what your thoughts on these albums, one love!
FM! by Vince Staples
Fetti by Curren$y and Freddie Gibbs
When I first heard about this album was coming out I just shook my head and asked 'WHY?!" I was a huge Curren$y when I was a Junior in high school but his relevance and music has majorly declined and Gibbs is in his prime right now and been on a hot streak since his 2014 collab album with Madlib, it just sounded like an odd pairing. Well to my surprise, this is very good, like holy shit I am blown away. Alchemist handles the production on this entire EP/Album and it's a perfect match for Gibbs and Curren$y. Curren$y held up his own with Gibbs and sounds like his old self, and Gibbs is Gibbs so he didn't disappoint. An album that I thought why it exists but I am glad it does exist. 8/10
White Bronco by Action Bronson
Disappointed and bored is how I felt listening to Bronson's new album. Production has mainly been a highlight for a lot of Bronson's work but the production sounds soulless, even for a short album I lose interest super fast. Bronson's rhymes sound phoned in, lazy, unmotivated, and not funny, which I know for having funny and witty lines in the past with a lot of charisma but here it sounds he doesn't care anymore. I know this is the first independent in quite some time and he left Vice due to "creative differences" so maybe he wasn't in the right mind frame when he recorded this entire album. Hopefully his next project he is more focused and fewer distractions. 4/10
FM! by Vince Staples
Not sure if this is an album, mixtape, playlist or a bible but this is Vince's best work to date. It's a short project only running at 22 minutes and honestly, nothing bad to say about this other than I wished it was longer, I love the whole concept behind it, sounding like a station you would hear on Sirius XM with no commercials, random breaks here and there, fan phone calls, and snippets of new songs, which we get from Earl and Tyga. Vince's beat choices have been questioned in the past but the production is top notch with an old school west coast vibe with a modern twist by Kenny Beats. Lyrics and the hooks on this album is Staples catchy's shit ever but does have a dark side to them as well. A fun little project that Vince Staple's did and always excited what he does next. 8/10.
NOT ALL HEROES WEAR CAPES by Metro Boomin
Young Metro has come outta of "retirement" and returns with a new album and man this is how you do a compilation album, my fellow producers and DJs. It does fall off a bit towards the end of the of the album but it's consistent. I'm glad the rappers here that he has worked with over the years didn't phone in it like most producer/DJ guided projects you hear in the past or today from the artists. Metro production is in top form as you expect, with a mix of bangers, melodic moody beats, and even some dancehall vibes. Also, 21 Savage stole the show and was the clear MVP on this, that whispering shit on "Don't Come Out The House" is funniest/greatest shit I heard this year. 8/10
The Last Rocket by Takeoff
It's Takeoff turn to drop his solo album and yeah I am very indifferent towards this. It is better than Culture 3 and Quavo solo effort (Thank god this album wasn't as long as those) but nothing stands out me too. There are a few decent cuts here and Takeoff does his thing and held up his own time to time but the hooks on this album are pretty bad/lazy and Takeoff doesn't have a lot of charisma like Offset or Quavo. At this point, I'm sort of burned out on the Migo's wave, maybe offset solo will restore that feeling but I am not getting my hopes up. 5/10
Pieces Of a Man by Mick Jenkins
I was worried about going to this cause after "Water[s]" Mick's music to me was starting to decline and I had little hope to hear this album but I have to eat my words cause this was good. Mick last album to me felt he was overthinking too much but on here he keeps it simple with his lyrical content and production which is easily is his greatest strength. Mick's is a wordsmith and has a lot of clever and witty lines, there is an issue though where I wished his hooks could've had more punch to it and t be remember cause the replay value to this is low. Still an enjoyable listen, if you had fallen off from Mick's music you should give me a second chance and give this a listen. 7/10
