BROCKHAMPTON is an upcoming hip-hop group currently living in South Central LA and they're 12-15 members and they all met through the website kaynetothe. I am new to this group but I am aware to one of the members of the group Kevin Abstract, who I recently discovered last year through his album American Boyfriend that dropped late last year and I was impressed the way he blends hip-hop and alternative music. What got me curious and hyped for this album was the singles leading up to the release of this project, with songs like Heat, Gold, Face, and Star. What intrigued about BROCKHAMPTON was every member have their style and have this amazing chemistry which I feel a lot of this super hip hop crews need, It's been awhile a group like this has come along.
Heat was the first song I heard and I love aggressive production and flows every member spit on their verses and the hook is very raw and cutthroat. Gold was more of smooth feel of a track but Kevin's hook on this is so damn catchy, I had this shit stuck and caught myself singing the hook at work couple of times. I like the lines Ameer spit when he said: "Clips so long it'll make you mambo" or "Grab life by the horns when I whip the Lambo", pretty clever bars right there. Star has each member making pop culture references with each bar on the wordplay and metaphors is top notch. Kevin's verse towards gets a little more personal towards the end about his family don't fuck with cause how open he is with his sexual preferences but at least viceland does, side note check out the episode on viceland its some good shit.
Boys and Fake are pretty laid back with once again catchy hooks, Boys is more upbeat I love the bridge on this track. On Fake, the vocals are pitched up which at first listen it's a bit odd if you're not a fan of pitched up vocals but I enjoyed it after a few listens and I loves Dom's verse and I love the line where he calls the squad odd and compares them to vegetables that would be odd to mix but that what's the group very special cause their odd and weird. Bank is another solid track, it's a groovy track and Dom and Ameer did a damn good job on here and I like Ameer talks a little bit about his past life and the bridge with Kevin and Dom is fantastic.
We got an another skit here which i did forget to mention the first one where we get Roberto talking about his house getting destroyed and he doesn't what to do now and in part two of this skit he talks about how you won't see him again cause he will kill himself tonight cause he feels he's not wanted and that don't remember him anyway so might as well end it all, which it's pretty left field once you translate what he is saying. Trip is more a personal track with Kevin talking about he dreams about who everybody he wants to because it's fine to be yourselves and believe you wanna be, The track does have some 808's vibes. Swim has each member on their talk about the positives and negative experience dealing with being of love, the song doesn't have a hip-hop feel but I like for what it is being very personal.
Bump is the best and most creative track on the album, in my opinion, I love in the verses we get bass knocking production with aggressive lyrics and then the hooks comes to this beat switches and we get depressing lyrics with a quiet, low-key guitar in the background and Kevin singing about being depressed with dealing fame and pressure with his solo career and brockhampton at the same time, God damn this track is great. Cash dives once again into each personal stories with dealing with racism and homophobia and also diving into dealing drugs and doing crimes to make ends meets, I love the trumpet at the end of the song and Dom's verse is highlight of mine with him diving a bit about the lower class getting mistreated and the stock market crashing and being broke.
Milk explains with the theme of the album dealing with self-improvement and merges with self-acceptance, Kevin on the hook explains that if you became a better version of yourself and you can reach your goals. Dom's verse counter points that they are times people overthink their problems and cloud their minds and lose focus, he raps about how he wants to speak from the heart but in order to keep society happy and say these things he keeps its all in his thoughts and rather write it out than speak it out. Face is my least favorite track if I had to pick one, mainly cause the subject is happy dealing with lost love and the pain comes with it, I like the concept but the other tracks that have a similar topic are stronger and better in my opinion. Waste ends the album with Bear//Face and it's a short track with a short verse and mostly a long hook but I think it's a cool track, Bear is a good singer and I like the idea and vibe and ends the album quite well.
Final Thoughts is this album lived up to exceptions and hype of the singles and think this album is up there with being one of the great hip-hop albums so far. The production is top notch, chemistry is great and the ideas and themes of the songs are very well done. I think this group has a lot potential to be a big thing in the future to come. I agree that BrockHampton comparisons to Odd Future but more of a mature feeling to them. I am very excited what the group and even solo wise what these gentlemen are gonna do next and I highly recommend you give this project a listen.
