The Divine Feminine by Mac Miller

Who is Mac Miller? Malcolm McCormick aka Mac Miller is a rapper and producer (under the alias Larry Fisherman) hailing from Pittsburgh and this is his fourth studio album, The Divine Feminine. Mac's rise in music is very interesting and has evolved from a young fun loving pop frat rapper to a series of projects where he was rapping about drugs and depression and rap with a monotone flow. He also dabbled into a being a producer and made a beat tape, a jazz ep under the name Larry Lovestein, and high-pitched horrorcore vibes mixtape under the name Delusional Thomas. This is a follow-up from his last album GO:OD AM and probably one of my favorite projects from his. He woke up a bit and step away from the depressed and monotone. sleepy, stoner raps to make more catchy tracks, more focused songs, and hop on very high-quality production. Going to this new album of his I was quite excited since I been a fan of Mac Miller's work since 2010 when I first discovered him through a cousin with his mixtape "KIDS". Being that the concept of is about love, romance, learning about from women and I think it could be about his new girlfriend Ariana Grande, and a lot of the production will have neo-soul and jazz raps vibes my interest peaked a bit for this album. "Dang" was the first singles to drop and it featured Anderson .Pakk and this is my favorite track and it Mac's vocal fit perfectly with his low-key laid back flow. This song does sound like it could've been on Anderson's album Malibu. So does this album live up to the hype I had for it?

In a way yes. The album does stick with the whole love theme and Mac does mention his past love and Ariana too, I think. The album kicks off with "Congratulations" and he's looking back an old love and being there with him before the money and fame and I appreciate the song cause Mac seems very mature here cause it seems like he still cares about her and appreciates the time they were together. "Stay" was another highlight of mine and love the sax in the background and yeah the song sounds like it could've been a Chance The Rapper song, with the hook being so damn catchy and having those vibes. The only gripe of this song is towards the end of the track when we get random moans, it did through me off quite a bit at the first listen but still a fun track to listen to. Cinderella was another highlight of mine, I love the hook and Ty Dolla $ign vocals is angelic and fits perfectly with the production from Dj Dahi. The whole theme of the track is vivid feelings for a lover and yeah I know some people may not gonna like the hook with "daddy" talk but yeah who cares still a good and love the beat transition when the outro comes in with the piano.

Planet God Damn is a good track as well, Has a 90's r&b feel to it  with the hook sung by Njomza. They are a few immature bars here like "your pussy a ride better than six flags" I kinda thought that was a bit not tasteless more a bit of cringe cause the line has probably been said before but still overall nice track and a nice throwback vibe. "We" was another single that was released before the album drop and at first I didn't care for the track thought it was alright but after a few listens I enjoy the track a bit more. It's smooth, love the production here and I enjoy the feature from Ceelo Green, wished tho he had more of presence here cause he was only on the bridge here but he did a solid job here. Last highlight here is the last track "God is Fair, Sexy Nasty" and I love this track, Kendrick only does the hook here but god damn he killed this track. I love when the beat drops and Kendrick come in, his vocals are powerful and sounds passionate, I know many include me wished Kendrick had a guest verse. Mac did his thing, His vocals here sound good and sounds like he has improved here with lyrics and with his flow as well. The song has an outro at the end where Mac's Grandmother being interviewed about how she met her husband and its was pretty nice ending.

They are a few negatives and tracks here that I didn't care for. The track skin was alright for what it was, The only thing I enjoyed here was the production. I enjoy the sax in the background, it's pretty sensual. Soulmate was another track where I enjoy the production here more than Mac itself, I didn't care for Mac's singing here. Mac's singing can always be hit or miss for me and it was a major miss for me. My least favorite track is the duet track he did with Ariana Grande and I enjoy the production like the other tracks here I mention, It's an another 90's smooth r&b vibe. Mac singing was a miss here and Ariana did alright here with her blissful vocals but they do work together well together here but the track isn't for me, The Way was a lot better track from the duo.

Final thoughts here I enjoy this album quite a bit, I don't where I would rank with Mac's huge discography but it may rank in maybe top five. I would say the major highlight for me is the production here and features. Mac did say a few immature, cringe, and cheesy bars but He gets a pass here cause here its nothing major. I think huge Mac fans would highly enjoy this. I appreciate he stayed focused on one topic, Love and did the concept quite well. I'm curious what's Mac gonna do next since he drops projects every year so we have to wait and see. That's all for today, Robert Garcia out.
