Telefone by Noname

Who is Noname? Fatimah Warner aka Noname also fka known as Noname Gypsy is a female hip hop aritst hailing from Chicago, Illinois and this is her debut project that was released via soundcloud. She been rapping and doing slam poetry since 2010, in 2013 however her name got was recognition when she was featured fellow Chicago MC Chance The Rapper breakthrough project "Acid Rap" on the track "Lost" and was also featured on Mick Jenkins "The Water[S]". She one's on those rappers where i haven't been blown away from hearing her guest verses but she is talented, she does have very this sleepy, laid back i mean laaaaid back flow. Her style and production which its all over this project has this neo soul type vibe which i noticed its been done more lately in the mainstream but i think that style hasn't been done well in my opinion, usually because maybe the singer is not good, mixing and production is not well structured and sounds like a clutter mess but here i think here this project is put together very very good. with that brief introduction  lets dive right into this.

Telefone whole theme is basically self belief and growth and gives a little backstory about herself and give us this picture about her life, struggles and skeletons in her closet. "Bye Bye Baby" is one of these tracks that seems like a first time i ever heard a topic like in a rap song about the topic, abortion. As the song progress along she talks about getting an abortion and having self doubt about going through and that sometimes life give us presents before we are ready to accept it and what i like about this track is the first verse is the perspective of the mother and the seconded verse is seen through the babies eyes. At the end of the track she expresses attempting to move forward from going through and has visions of being heaven and taking care of the baby and references a few bible quotes about that a unborn baby is a baby of Christ and yeah its a very personal track and sad in a way. "Casket Pretty" is a short track wished it was a bit longer where she raps police brutality in the wake of recent shootings and the hook paints this picture where the definition of "Casket pretty" are under the risk of having their own life taken away and Noname worrying that she doesn't get that phone about a close one dying which seems it is known probable now a days to happen and she prays it doesn't happen.

"Diddy Bop" is a fun track and with the laid back soulful production its a perfect summer cookout music and pretty awesome verse from Raury. "Yesterday" is pretty opener to the track where she kicks about having fame and fortune but even though she has the fame and money she not happy deep down and rather use the money to help her family out and give granny a house and she mentions her brother Mike who was well known in the city for hosting open mic night events and she wishes he was around and saying it felt like just yesterday i seen you smile and yeah i shed a tear a bit,."Sunny Duet" has this doo wap feel to it and kinda puts a smile on my face while bopping my head to this and she mentions her drug use in her past and how she doesn't use them no more. "Forever" is a another solid track as well where she talks about her mother worried about her daughter is having too many drinks and she might be a alcoholic and also raps if she wishes the poverty wasn't around no more and vision the world to more positive and also any self doubt and that you need to believing in your inner self and get that negative outta of you. "Shadow Man" ends this project quite well where she raps death and mortality and every verse each artist is rapping/singing about being young, black and describing about their funerals and give us the picture that it seems like an norm that alot of young black males and females to talk about possible dying young with all the things going on right now with police shootings, and the shadow man is a figure saying just keep your hands up meaning to keep fighting for your rights and beliefs and that don't shoot, its a very powerful message and song and probably one of my favorite tracks on here.

Final thoughts on this project is yes this is a perfect neo soul mixed with hip hop project i heard, it blends well with good lyrics, production and decent mixing there is couple time the vocals sound a bit off and yeah some songs should've stayed on one whole theme but overall i was highly surprised how good this is. They might be some out there who probably won't like her laid back lazy flow or the whole upbeat gospel music but if you're feeling down or something to kick back out to a rainy day this is a perfect soundtrack for you so yeah shou tout to Noname and see where she goes from here. That's all for today Robert Garcia Out.
