Well, It's Drizzy SZN. Drake decided to drop a new mixtape of leaks and b-sides that he previously released, never been heard before, and were leaked snippets. He also announced he has plans to drop his sixth studio album sometime in a couple of months. I haven't been super excited for a Drake album in a while but with this new demo tape here, I had hope. "If You're Reading This, It's Too Late" and "Care Package" were tapes of mostly B-Sides and I loved those projects, "More Life" was an ok "playlist" but I just felt it was too long. And I am happy to report, I really loved this tape man.
Let me talk about those songs that he released before this mixtape dropped and I'll keep it brief on those. "When to Say When" and "Chicago Freestyle" is great, I love these types of Drake tracks, very moody production and him spitting introspective bars (which we get plenty of here). "Toosie Slide", man. Look the song is the definition of repetition and I was indifferent at this track but I'll admit over time this track grew on me. It's such a goofy song every time I hear it, I have a smile. "Desires" I wanted to like this cause Future is on here but this track and "Life Is Good" too, I was disappointed. Future did his thing on these songs but nothing clicked with me with those songs. "War" is my least favorite track, Mainly cause Drake wanted to do an accent here and it sounds so forced. I like the drill beat but I think I would've tolerated the track if he wasn't doing the accent. Now let's talk about the rest of the mixtape.
"Deep-Pockets" kicks off the project and Drake never misses with intro tracks, does he? It very laidback and Drake has a couple of clever lines like "Flip the F out like Fendi". This song was recorded around "Scorpion" and I'm glad it's on here cause it fits better here than that album. "Not You Too" has him in his feelings, singing about being betrayed and scolds his former lover. Chris Brown is featured and he mainly does background vocals here and which I am ok with, he works fine here and they both have good chemistry when they sing a duet together on some lines. "Time Flies" was supposed to be a different version of "Life is Good" and I am glad this is its own separate track. I do like the hi-hats and the percussion is smooth on the beat. Another typical Drake relationship track but it is still good. Drake has this really unintentionally funny line where he says "you believe in angles more than angels". My friend told me Drake has this thing where he says that's not supposed to be funny but they are and I hundred percent agree. "Landed" has him on braggadocious talk, flexing the private jet he showed off a while back, It a cool song nothing much here just him here flexing, Cardo did his thing on production.
"DFL" is a banger, Thug and Future on here spitting back and forth to each other on the hook and their verse, I want a Super Smiley 2 dammit! Drake does hold up his own here but Thug and Future do outshine him here and that's ok. "Pain 1993" was the one song everyone wanted and well, it is here alright. Look, I know people hate this or like this, Did Playboi Carti ruined this track? in my opinion not really. Yes it is one of his weaker verses and performances, he overdid the baby voice once he kept going but I thought that track was fine. I think if Drake's verse wasn't good and the production wasn't fantastic, yeah this track would be a huge letdown. So, I like the track.
"Losses" is another Drake introspective track which I do Love, rapping about a relationship that went left and stating these are facts and also reflecting on things. Drake has a few clever lines, one that stood out to me was "It was always you and I without the T-Y" which spells out unity, I liked that. He does have another unintentionally funny line, "Like I'm tryna show the waves, this no cap", it is a bad line but it's funny as hell. "From Florida With Love" I enjoyed this one a lot, Drake reflects on hearing Wayne's lollipop with Kobe and talks about being robbed at gunpoint and had to change how he moved around. It was weird as hell to hear the "PLUG" producer tag cause it's very laid back and not a banger. The song seems unfinished cause when the second verse comes in the first half it is a repeat of the first verse but I think that's ok in my opinion since this a demo tape. "Demons" is Drake doing the New York drill sound, I liked this a lot more than "War". Drake does that accent he did on "War" but he didn't overdo it plus with the features from Fivo and Sosa Geek, boosted up the track to make a more enjoyable solid song.
Overall this mixtape, demo tape is really really great. I didn't have too many issues with this besides one song, even the songs I didn't care they weren't terrible. This is the first Drake project since 2015 where I came out of it really love it and not be indifferent. I think whenever he does drop his sixth studio album I am gonna be a bit more excited and not just "yeah whatever", just please keep the damn album short, you don't need to boost those numbers up with twenty songs.
