The hip-hop duo/brothers from Mississippi take an interesting concept with their third album, a three-disc album with one disc is the duo and the other two are solo albums. Since the release of their second project people have been clamoring for solo tapes from the duo, mostly from Swae Lee than Slim Jxmmi since Swae has found some solo success outside of the duo. Going into this I was worried if this was gonna suffer the same effect as 'Culture II" where it was gonna overstay their welcome with 27 tracks and also Rae Sremmurd are mostly for party/ bump in the whip music and it can get boring and repetitive really fast. Another issue was, are the solo tapes even gonna be passable? Was Swae Lee gonna exceed everyone exceptions with his solo effort? Can Slim Jxmmi do well on his own with his album? In this review, I'm gonna break down each of the three-disc one by one and just give out my thoughts, so let's get started.
SR3MM: This is easily the best disc on this entire collection of music. "Powerglide" featuring Juicy J was one of the first singles to drop from this and easily the best song here, one of my favorite songs so far in 2018. The track samples the Three Six Mafia track "Slide 2 Slide" and I'm happy they homage to the track on here and treated with respected, adding Juicy J was also a nice touch too. "Up In my Cocina" is another highlight, I love the banger production and how catchy hook is. I also love the references to food and cooking up in the cocina which means kitchen in Spanish so it fits perfectly with the theme of the track so nice attention to detail. "Buckets" featuring Future is solid, the instrumental is very low key and love the creepy vibe from the piano keys added to it. Future does "Future" his way through this track but the vibe of "Buckets" fits well with him. I love the confidence and braggadocious bars on "Perplexing Peagus", a track I think it was a freebie that was dropped sometime last year, What makes the track so good to me how Swae Lee kills the hook on here and also reference his Ferrari to a Peagus and paints a funny picture in my head of him riding a Peagus for some reason.
"Rock N Roll Hall of Fame" is a basically a part two to 'Black Beatles", comparing the two would be apples and oranges but the song is good, and "T'd Up" has grown on me since the release of the single. "CLOSE" is the worst song here, mainly how lazy the hook is with them just spelling "Close" and Travis doesn't sound like he wants to be there. The Weeknd is easily his worst feature in his entire career so far, which surprises me when Abel is featured on someone else track, it becomes his. "Bedtime Stories" he mumbles his way through on the hook, I remember at first listen I didn't know if that was really him at all and "42" was pretty forgettable in my opinion.
The first disc is easily the best part of this entire collection and a lot of great highlights from the catchy hooks to the production, it's easily the duo's best album so far. Nothing groundbreaking here but for its main purpose to be fun party/background/bump in the whip music it does a great job here. Now it's time for the duos to be on their "SpeakerBoxx/Love Below"shit so here we go.
SWAECATION: Swae Lee is one of the better "auto crooners" out there in the pop-rap world and with it being only 9 tracks it didn't overstay it's welcome and was easy to digest "Heat of The Moment" is the best track here, I had the hook stuck in my head, the production is good, and vocals were really solid. "Offshore" with Young Thug is a perfect match on here, I love tropical vibes and Thug verse is very solid, my favorite line is the one where Thug said he would slap Trump any day of the week. "Touchscreen Navigation" is another highlight where Swae's falsetto sounds really good and I like the challenge is doing with the track where fans can submit their verse with the second half of the track where it's mostly instrumental and send them to Swae to peep so that's pretty nice. "Lost Angels" has a throwback vibe to wavy 80's type tracks, reminds something you would play during a late night weekend drive through the city. "Red Wine" is one of mine least favorite tracks, mainly his vocals are pretty terrible and was doing his best to hit the notes but they didn't deliver. "Heartbreak in Encino Hills" is a snore fest, the two singles "Guatemala" and "Hurt to Look" were decent cuts but nothing special and the last track "What's in Your Heart" could've been a better ending.
Overall this was a decent effort from Swae Lee, SWAECATION didn't exceed my exceptions that I had hoped for but I think what it was worth for I think he did an ok job here. The album was gonna be super predictable and lyrically they're some moments that can be cheesy or just bad but they are highlights here from keeping the project dull or lose interest.
JXMTRO: I'm gonna be straightforward, JXMTRO is the weakest project on this three-disc album. They're some bright spots here and there on JXMTRO, Slim Jxmmi has a lot of energy, his flows can be decent and you do get the typical banger type production but I don't see nothing special here at all. I thought did his thing on the first disc and yeah I agree with people he did better than Swae on SR3MM but there's nothing something exciting here, I honestly don't see why people think JMXTRO was better than SWAEACTION. Like are people being serious or just trolling to be different, One thing I do agree though he does sound like early Young Jeezy. I did enjoy the two singles "Chanel" and Brxnks Trucks" that he dropped, "Chanel" does have a feature from Pharrell who does sound really odd on here, sounds he was doing his best impression of Swae or Mickey Mouse. Zoe Kravitz has the worst feature on "Anti Smokers Club", I loved her feature on Janelle Monae's new album but with Zoe feature on the track is bad. "Keep God First" was a super off topic where on the hook he talks about God but yet the verses have no relation to the hook or the topic of the track, I like the JID sample though. So yeah overall I was totally indifferent to this project.
Final thoughts are that if SR3MM was the first disc only I would've rated the album a bit higher but overall the whole collection/album's of music is pretty decent. These three albums were dropped at a good time for the summer and a lot of the songs from three discs are perfect for the summer. I do appreciate that SR3MM with being at a total of 27 tracks the album didn't overstay it's welcome. I doubt Rae Sremmurd next project won't be like this ever again but for what they did here, well-done lads.
