Pusha T's long-awaited third solo album and one of my most anticipated albums I waited for in the last two and half years is here finally! Everyone should know Pusha T is, One half of the former duo Clipse which was his brother No Malice and Pusha himself. Pusha's solo effort so far up to this has been pretty decent but I always felt I wanted more, My Name is My Name is had great highlights but wasn't cohesive enough. Darkest Before Dawn which was a prelude to the scrapped album 'King Push", It was good but to me, it wasn't overall great. "DAYTONA" has Kanye West handling the production on the entire album, only 7 tracks, clocks in at 21 minutes, and with the Whitney Houston crack den bathroom as the album cover that Kanye paid 85k for the rights to use and obviously it stirred controversy, I think Kanye did this mainly it would cause attention and headlines which it did of course. Enough talking let's get right into this review!
Pusha on DAYTONA raps what he pretty much raps about, COCAINE AND CRACK! I know they're fans don't really care for the drug dealing raps from a lot of other rappers but Pusha T does a good job to paint a really great picture of his past in the drug dealing game plus I like the way he flows where his delivery where he makes you feel every word he raps. "If You Know You Know" kicks the project with this amazing guitar sample and I love the message of the record where some people can really relate to him who had the similar path to Pusha's. I liked the line "The Company I keep is not corporate enough, Child Rebel Soldier you ain't orphan enough" oh what could've been with the child rebel solider crew with Ye, P, and Lupe, one could dream.
"The Games We Play" is a straightforward song with each verse being an ode to all the expensive and luxury things you could buy with drug money. Production is fantastic with these old school vintage horns and guitar in the beat, favorite line is "This is for my bodybuilding clients moving weight" very clever. "Hard Piano" is the only really major weak moment on the album, production could've more of kick to it plus the first two bars were eye rolling. The hook has this grand and epic feel to it which made the song just barely passable and Rick Ross feature was just ok compared to his other features where they're a lot better.
"Come Back Baby" is up next and I love the gospel vibe from the intro and the hook, also how it connects with drug addiction but with the twist relating to Pusha's addiction to selling drugs. I enjoyed the minimal production with the drums and that bassline and the beat switch to the hook to the verses is very nice. I enjoyed the story with a drug dealer who seems evil but does have a nice side to him, that Ying Yang line was easily one of my favorites. "Santeria" is a dedication to his road manager who was killed, I enjoyed the hook from 070 shake which is sung in Spanish and it is very chilling and beautiful. It's a nice changed up where they can be a very side to the lifestyle that Pusha's been in. "What Would Meek Do?" and I enjoyed the reference to meek mill with one shoulder is the angel and the other is the devil and that line about the judge was pretty funny as fuck. Kanye's guest verse was pretty good, wasn't his best guest verse but I can tell he was having a lot of fun with the recent drama going on with him and how very left field his raps were from being pulled over with a Maga hat on to the seeing the scars in him like Seal.
"Infrared" as the time I'm writing this review has caused a lot of attention and been talked since the release with of this album with Drake's response with "Duppy Freestyle" which was a good diss track till couple day's later we had Pusha responded back with "The Story of Adidon" which my god the fucking savagery by Pusha. Back to "Infrared" it's a great closer to the album and I love the "It was written like Nas, but it came from Quentin" line, the line about when Will Smith won the first rap Grammy and Jay didn't get his until he got Annie was perfect too and the very chilling and creepy production with the sample was very solid too.
Final Thoughts are it's a very great and cohesive album for an "album" that's at a length of an EP. It's almost a nearly perfect album and I don't have any major gripes with DAYTONA, it is easily Pusha's best solo effort. Awhile lyrically content it's nothing new from Push himself but he was on top of his game on here and Maga West aka Kanye on the boards here was fantastic. It was on those albums despite its short runtime, you will go back and have it on repeat and maybe you might have missed something on the first couple of listens. GOOD MUSIC is already good start with the Wyoming sessions and let's how the rest do for the month of June. Thank you for reading, have a great day!
