Culture by Migos

2013 was a huge year for the hip-hop trio Migos when 'Versace" dropped that year, with the group rapping with the triplet flow which became a huge success in the mainstream charts with hits like "Fight Night" and "Handsome and Wealthy". Around the summer of 2015 it looked the trio had hit their peak, most of the singles on their debut album "Yung Rich Nation" which was delayed many times didn't get a lot of play and buzz like their previous hits from their mixtape days and with the mismanagement of the rollout with the album as well and on the top of Offset doing some time in jail, album was a huge disappointment. After the album release they left 300 and be Independent, they released a mixtape and one of the tracks became a huge success. "Look At My Dab" gained worldwide attention and spawned many people with vine and athletes like Odell Beckham and Cam Newton doing the dabbing dance in celebration.

They continued on their revamped hype once again with the song "Dat Way" with fellow rapper Rich The Kid and the group was rumored to drop a collab album with Young Thug called "MigosThuggin" but was shelved, Group did release one more mixtape beginning of 2016 before they went on tour. Migos were announced to be one of the new acts to sign with Kanye West label GOOD Music in Septemeber however recently the trio said they are not signed by GOOD Music and just had a few discussions but nothing came of it. The Migos announced that a new album was on the way and drop the lead single "Bad and Boujee" featuring Lil Uzi Vert but it took a couple of months for the single to gain attention when the whole "Rain Drop, Drop Top" meme came into play and song spiked into the top ten charts and even became the Migos and Lil Uzi first number hit single and became a platinum hit.

This was a perfect single for the Migos and I do enjoy the track even I felt like with some people the song became quite annoying at times with the song becoming a meme and everything and yeah at one point I was on the whole "Lil Uzi Vert verse is trash" bandwagon but now with more listens of this track it was grown on me. The next three singles to drop right after this were "Call Casting", "T-Shirt" and "What The Price", "T-Shirt" is a really great track, I love the hook here, Quavo who currently is probably one of the best right now when it comes to hooks and guests spots either when he's solo or as a trio. What I also love about this also is the music video, with them in the woods wearing fur coats and look like they are having lots of fun. "Call Casting" is great too with some of the best ad-libs on here like most of the tracks on here and everyone on here all came together and correct on here, Takeoff had the best verse on here. "What The Price" is a different pace for the Migos where the track is very low key and slow with them rapping about their past and come up, I'm not a huge fan of this single, wouldn't say it's trash but I do enjoy the production here but it reminds me of like a leftover Travis Scott track which I can sense the influence from Travis on here.

Speaking of Travis he is one of the features on here, "Kelly Price" starts with this eerie vibe and Quavo, Offset, and Scott are on the hook with the continued trend of name drop of 90's R&B singers with Quavo saying he gonna make his girl "sing" like Kelly Price in the bedroom. This song does drag on quite a bit with it being very slow but I do like this song and does give use a taste of that Quavo and Travis album that's rumored to drop I think sometime this year and Migo's and Travis have quite the chemistry here. Gucci Mane is another artist featured on "Slippery", His verse was decent, I do like the line when he said, "I buy Ferrari's like Jordan's, I'm Mike and  Y'all Pippen". I love the production here, sounds like something you hear when a UFO is landing I saw someone mentioned, fun track indeed. 2 Chainz is on the track "Deadz" which is slang for money with former dead presidents on the money. Chainz verse was honestly really good here and the best guest verse I have heard in a minute, His solo can be hit or miss for me but I always enjoy his guest verses. I do enjoy the line from Takeoff when he said "Block on lock, call me Kurt Angle", as a wrestling fan I always when rappers use wrestlers as a metaphor.

"Get Right Witcha" and "Big on Big" are another favorites of mine, they do sound like songs that could've been on their early mixtapes, Also shoutout to Zaytoven for the beautiful piano work on here on "Big on Big". "All Ass" is my least favorite track on here, I think the hook is alright but for an "ass song" it wasn't that good but I can see this being at local strip club very very soon. "Out Yo Way" ended the album and it was a pretty left field vibe for the Migos cause they switch to like a pop-rap vibe and become a love song. The whole theme is the total opposite of the stereotypical view of women in rap and the trio appreciates that special someone in their life who always their with them thick and thin. I do appreciate what the Migo's were trying to do here but overall just was a vanilla love song and ended the album with a dud.

Final thoughts are that this was a lot better than their first solo debut album but not as a good as their early mixtapes. They seem focused here than ever on this entire project and the trio returned to the vibe of their early sound and make hits and happy for them that came back in a way. It's weird to say that but they had been out of the spotlight and people's mind for a good minute but I guess they can thank the internet for making them a viral sensation once again. I am hoping that can continue on with more hits and be still an influence on the culture (No Pun Intended).
