Who is YG? Keenon Daequan Randy Jackson aka YG is a rapper haling from Comp--, oh wait excuse me I mean Bompton, California. "Still Brazy" is the follow up to his debut project "My Krazy Life". YG first burst on the scene back in 2009 with one of his huge singles at the time "Toot and Boot it" following up to his debut album he dropped a few mixtape along the way. Going back to "My Krazy Life" i thought it was decent at best, only because of the production and features and unfortunately not YG which was a problem to me, He's not a terrible rapper, he's not great either just decent but he does make very catchy fun music. So i was really curious what's he gonna do here on "Still Brazy" since no DJ Mustard production was on here so i wasn't sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing. So let's dive right into this review.
Now i must say this project, really surprised me, in a good way. I could say that YG has really improved on here and i could throw his name in the hat of "Most Improved Rapper of the Decade". Now the three singles leading up to this album here i highly enjoy here, "Twist my Fingaz" has this awesome throwback west coast 90's G Funk sound that my younger self would highly enjoy, its very simple and straight forward. "FDT" which translation to "Fuck Donald Trump" and when first heard this i kinda giggle at it, not saying it was bad it just a funny track to listen but overtime i highly enjoyed it. I know its not very political track like a Kendrick Lamar or Immortal Technique song but its very simple, in your face and straight forward to the point. Nipsey Hussle comes throughs with a pretty awesome verse as well so if your anti trump you will definitely fuck with this. The other single "Why You Always Hatin" features the six god himself Drake and another artist who i don't know much about named Kamaiyah, its a fun track and decent verse from Drake, the hook is very catchy and the production once again has the old school feels and i will mention that many times in this review so fair warning.
Now what i like about this project is YG is very personal on here, like the track "Who Shot Me' where he raps being paranoid after getting shot last summer and asking who shot him, was it a stranger or someone close to him in his camp cause he does reference someone name Jamal and hooking up with his "lady". Another personal track as well is the seventh track"Gimme Got Shot" where YG says a lot people except to him to "gimme gimme gimme" and that people around feel entitled to get want they want cause they know him personally cause hes a famous rapper. In the hook he explains that people rather receive a handout than rather work hard for things and the paranoia kicks in again cause he a major trust issues from friends and even family.
Another highlight for me is that i mentioned early is YG gets very political very towards the end of the album with tracks like "Blacks and Browns" featuring Mexican MC Sad Boy. Both of them exchange verses about discrimination with both Hispanics and African-Americans on a daily basis from black and black crime and illegal immigration and both realized they have very topical issues and can relate with the issues going on today. The last track on here "Police Get Away wit Murder" and the hook is very powerful has this anthem feel and can hear this be chanted at rallies in the future.
Another favorites of mine i enjoyed on here before i give my final thoughts are tracks like "Don't come to LA" where the whole theme is how LA really is in the streets and its glitz and glamour, "She Wish She Was" is basically a track about where a women wants to act like a guy and lets just say if you're a very pro women you shouldn't listen to this, just saying. "Bool, Balm and Bollective" is like a sequel to "Bicken Back Being Bool" is the ultimate blood anthem and "Still Brazy" was another single that was dropped and its a cool track as well. "Word is Bond" is cool as well. One track I had to pick that in i didn't care for was "I Got A Question" featuring Lil Wayne, I did like the production but the lyrics felt lazy and verses seemed average at best.
So my final thoughts on "Still Brazy" is this project quite surprised me, I felt like YG stepped up content and lyrical wise and brought some really good concepts to the project. With the mix of gangsta tracks, political views and YG himself getting very personal on here was a very good combo. Shoutout to YG for coming through and lets see what he does next. Mexican Mamba Out.
