Who is Joey Purp? Joey Davis aka Joey Purp is a Chicago rapper, one half of the duo Leather Corduroys and one the founding members of the SAVE MONEY Crew along with fellow chi town Mc's Chance the Rapper, Vic Mensa and many more. This is a follow to his debut mixtape 'The Purple Tape" back in 2012 and was featured in the Social Experiment project "Surf" and has released a couple singles last year like "Morgan Freeman" and "Run It Up". Now with that brief introduction now lets dive into this.
The mixtape kicks off with an epic intro "Morning Sex", Joey raps his success, lost, and truth which sets the tone to this project. With his views about the violence in the streets of Chicago when getting involved with money and murder but raps a verse about life on both sides where he seen his people get killed or people killing other people. He drops a clever metaphor where he says 'Sitting ducks is like eating fast food to carnivores". Another line i like on here where purp spits "I'm Playing spades with all aces, look at my hand and all see faces, it ain't no squares in my shell cases. My favorite thing about this track is that its very straight forward and love his delivery and flow to this. Lyrics are very straight to the point just reflecting on his life in hometown. Major shoutout to the producer Odd Couple for the samples on here. The next track takes sorta takes a left turn with "Girls" featuring Chance, its a very funny track i must say. Its very easy to know that track is about just Chance and Joey rapping what they like in their in women. Track three "MONEY AND BITCHES' with Mick Jenkins is another simple straight forward track, very braggadocious on here and Jenkins came with very solid guest verse. Only compliant is that i didn't like the hook repeating itself over and over again the end. Next track is a another soild one with "When I'm Gone" where he talks about his outlook on haters and all the wrongs in his city and the corrupt politicians taking away basic rights away from people. What i like about this track here is that the beat is very upbeat and uplifting but once you hear the lyrics is very dark and reality sets in about today's society. "Winners Circle" with Vic Mensa is a good track as well where they spit the awareness to crime and change in society. What i like about this track is Vic verse where joey does tweet like just remember vic knows how to spits them bars. To finish with the positives with tracks like "Cornerstone", "Photobooth" and the outro "Escape" with themes of struggles of being a young kid in Chicago. only track i didn't enjoy was "Say You Do" with this weird latin jazz sample. I do like rappers taking risks and trying new things but it doesn't plus i don't like the vocals on here.
My Final thoughts on this is a strong contender for mixtape of the year, i know most of the songs have sort of the same theme and very few uplifting tracks i think this was soild and highly recommend if love rappers if you like rappers with bars, lyrical and poetic themes or fan of Chicago rap, Also being one whom loves production and good ones at that i highly enjoy this. I can talk (or type which i'm doing right now" about this project but i highly recommend this and support it. Thank Joey Purps for this and can't wait to hear more music from you. Mexican Mamba out.
