Who are The Underachievers? AK and Issa Gold are a rap duo haling from Brooklyn, New York in the Flatbush neighborhood (Hence the name of the mixtape). This is their third mixtape which now this is their fifth project overall and this tape is a follow up to their last well received project and one of my top ten albums last year, Evermore: The Art of Duality. Pretty much every project the duo has dropped have highly enjoyed, their whole theme of the music is very psychedelic, spirituality and allusions to open your "third eye". They were signed to signed to Flying Lotus's label Brainfeeder in 2013 and released their official debut mixtape "Indigoism" in 2013 which both garner very high praise from critics alike, the following mixtape "Lords of Flatbush" also received high praise as well despite a totally different theme to thier debut with bangers beats and less spiritually and psychedelic rhymes but had its high points and step forward with the duo. 2014 they released their debut album "Cellar Door: Terminus ut Exordium" which i thought was decent at best but i did see improvement with the duo. Their next album Evermore which i mention early was fantastic and exceed my exceptions.
Now going to this mixtape "It Happened in Flatbush" I was a lil curious what theme the duo was going for here, were they gonna stick to the whole psychedelic rhymes or rap over banger beats like "Lords Of Flatbush". To be honest this mixtape feels like a "throwaway" mixtape where maybe this tracks could be leftover or maybe some new music, then again this mixtape is to promote their upcoming USA tours starting around Memorial Weekend, but despite being a throwaway this project is still good. If you're looking for music to bump in your vehicle or put your good speaker system to use this is the tape for you. Every track is is banger after another, I love the opening track here "Never Win" which takes shot at local New York Troy Ave who mock the death of fellow Beast Coast rapper Capital Steez, and if your wondering what "Beast Coast" is, its basically itself a collective of groups including Underachievers , Flatbush Zombies, Pro Era, and Phony Ppl. "Play That Way" has some clever lines with Subzero and Dragonball Z references which the nerd in me enjoyed. "Al Capone" had a another clever line where AK said "I just poke her like Lady Gaga slowin, Now she my back like her first name Logan" which is the real alias of X Men's Wolverine. "Going Against God" is another favorite highlight of mine where AK snaps on the seconded verse where he drops the line "Dont get Meeked Milled" where he give warnings to the average MC's to step up. "Young Kobe" is another track i highly enjoyed where both Issa and AK spit bars back and forth over production from Ronny J who has done work with Florida Rapper Denzel Curry. If I had to pick a least favorite track is probably the last track "Really Got It" I wasn't really feeling the beat and the hook felt lazy in my opinion.
Overall this was a nice mixtape from The Underachievers clocking around under a hour and it was very short and simple to the point. If you're fans of the duo here you would highly enjoy this project and if you're new to them and enjoy banger beats and lyrically rhymes than this project is right for you. I listen to tape with over good speakers man this shit slaps ha excuse my french here.
Thank you Issa Gold and AK for this project and thank you guys for reading this. Mexican Mamba Out.
