Coloring Book By Chance The Rapper

Who is Chance The Rapper? Chancelor Bennett aka Chance The Rapper is a 23 Year old Rapper, Songwriter and Singer From Chicago, Illinois. This is his 3rd mixtape (4th if you count is involvement with Surf by Donnie Trumpet and The Social Experiment). He Began his music career in 2010 but didn't release his debut mixtape till 2012 10 Days which was inspired from him severing a 10 day school suspension in his high school for having marijuana on campus. It created quite a buzz landing himself in Complex top ten Chicago artist to watch out for,Forbes Magazine, and even manged to get a feature on Childish Gambino mixtape Royalty. In 2013 he released his universe critically acclaim mixtape Acid Rap. Many Fans consider this as a "Classics" Projects and to be honest made me became a fan of his.  His Style was very odd to say the least with him rapping off the beat but made him different and fresh. In 2015 he was featured on Surf, a free album by Donnie Trumpet and the Social Experiment which include Donnie, Chance, Nate Fox, Greg Landfair and Peter Cottontale. To be honest i wasn't a huge fan of this project but fans of Chance and Critics did enjoy it and receive positive feedback with its fusion of Jazz, Dance, Neo Soul and Hip Hop.

In 2016 there were rumors of a Third Project from Chance at the time currently untitled. Was it gonna be his debut album or a third mixtape? it has been what felt like three long years since Acid Rap, and he did make an appearance on SNL, Back in February along with Kanye West performed the powerful intro to The Life of Pablo "Ultralight Beam" which hinted of a project titled "Chance 3". He did make other appearances on other talk shows either make a guest artist and even performed a new song called Angels featuring Saba. Back in April he did announced the Project Chance 3 via Twitter and the next week on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon Premiered Blessings and announced the project will come out the very next week. Late Thursday the Album Dropped exclusive on Apple Music and the titled was changed to "Coloring Book"

Now to start off point blank, this is project is one of his best to date. Track one is titled All We Got featuring Kanye West and Chicago Children Choir. Chance met Kanye about i would say a year or two ago, and in many interviews Chance has said Kanye was of his biggest Influence in Music.  which doesn't come as a huge surprise, You can sense a lil Kanye influence in Chance's Music and they are both from Chicago. Chance manged to be friends with YE and got a featured on the Life of Pablo which i said early in this review. This is a very powerful intro to the album, has very gospel feel to it, which majoirty has this feel to it with his production and lyrics. one negative i would say there are some mixing issues which some of this albums does have but ill save that for later down this review. And YE did song like a cyborg all over this to be honest. Overall Solid Opener.

Track Two is No Problems featuring Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz and this song debuted hours before Coloring Book. You can hear the gospel feel once again with the background choir and Chance throughout take shots at major labels. 2 Chainz drops a fun verse on his track despite the line he dropped "I run shit like diarrhea" Cringe. Weezy F Baby drops a surprising decent verse and not so bad bars mostly him spitting about cash money and Birdman and to free the "Carter 5" come on Birdman put some respeck on Waynes name.

Next Four Tracks after No Problems are more laid back and Grateful vibe. "Summer Friends" has a pretty awesome sample and a laid back summer vibe. "Same Drugs" is a personal favorite Track of mine. Chance's early work was a very druggy vibe and feel to it. On this track it flows through with a very peaceful piano riff. On this song it seems the message is about him not doing drugs anymore with the hook him singing "We dont do the same drugs no more" but stated on his twitter that song is about a girl he was friends with in the past and how they have very different interests. Chance has grown up, he has a child, and doesn't do the same drugs when he younger, so he turn his ways where he went from rapping about getting high on acid and now hes more peaceful and grateful in life. so thats why i feel like this song is very important. Kinda almost forgot to type about this two tracks i know i'm so professional "Dram Sings Special" was a cool lil interlude and "Blessings" is an Overall Good Track, i'm loving the production on here and the gospel feel too. He did spit a couple good bars on this track that's very quotable for the gram.

Track seven well it took a hard left, like a really HARD LEFT. Titled "Mixtape" featuring Young Thug and Lil Yatchy aka Lil Boat. To be honest its one of the weirdest collabs out there currently. We can pictured Lil Boat and Thug on a track but with Chance?! ODD. In some weird way the song works with this ATL trap vibe. Its very left field for Chance to do a track like this but i like when artist take a risk and try new things. The whole theme of the track is about the love and appreciation of mixtapes, free music, disapproval of major labels and how free music should be recognized at awards show like Billboard and Grammy's, which the Grammy committee might consider which should be done with the popularity of free streaming sites and how easy to download/upload free music thanks to the internet, plus majority of mixtapes in the last five years from current mainstreams rappers can be Grammy worthy. Overall this track was random but a good one at that.

Angels is another one that is a favorite of mine. The theme of the song is reflection of Chance's rise in music and repping Chicago. Its a very uplifting track for the people of Chicago and that we are all angels. The music video is awesome as well.

Juke Jams featuring Bugatti Beibz aka Justin Bieber and Towkio. The theme song is about innocent young love and peer pressuring to sexual activities. The main reason for the name of the song is to "juke" to the music at parties. personally not my cup of tea of a song but if it was playing at party during the slow song moments i wouldn't be mad at it and i would juke to song like a football player or something ha.

All Night is least my favorite track on the album, not cause its trash. It seems too radio friendly and poppy which its fine, i can picture this song being played at my local radio station. its very upbeat. Kinda like Juke Jams if this was played at a party i wouldn't be mad at this.

Now this next track "How Great" Featuring Jay Electronica (WHERE  IS DAMN ALBUM?!?!?) and "My Cousin Nicole" (His Actual Cousin) is fantastic. With his cousin Nicole with Epic grand intro for two and a half minutes praising how great the lord and savior aka the man upstairs  God is. I haven't been church on a Sunday since was five years old well (Well cause i fell asleep like no lie) it makes me feel like i am at church. Then an epic beat drop Chance comes through with a fantastic verse, very poetic bars throughout this verse.  After a random pause Jay Electronica comes through with personally the best guest verse on the entire album, even though we been waiting and i mean WAITING for his debut project for the last 5 years and he rarely does guest spots or drops music it was good to hear Electronica again. if you haven't heard of him before i highly suggest to peep his music.

"Smoke Break" featuring Future is another laid back. its a perfect if you're laying down, smoking couple of joints or blunts and just relax.  Future comes through with a pretty decent verse, kinda funny he threw some jabs at Future lite himself, Mr. Panda aka Desiigner. No complaints on this track.

"Finish Line/Drown" is a two part track, its a pretty decent track with features from T-Pain, Chicago Mc "Noname", Gospel Artist Kirk Franklin and Eryn Allen Kane. The whole theme of the track is Chance reflecting on his success and how hes been by the lord and savior himself throughout his rise. T-Pain sounds very preachy on here but it was nice to hear him again and have a decent feature on here. The last track on here is "Blessings" which is kinda like Blessings part two, its another poetic verse. I know some people like this version than another one but i think they are both equally good.

My final thoughts on Coloring Book is that Chance came through with another solid project. One negative i did have they were some mixing issues on some tracks but doesn't really hurt the project that much, in my opinion to say the least. This whole album made me have a huge smile on my face, i'm into religion all the much but it made me like i was at church. I really enjoy the gospel feel to it, you can sense Chance feels grateful and has come along way. I feel like Chance has been moved up in the ranks and can be discussed in the top tens of current rappers right now maybe even top five depends who you ask.

Thank You Chance for another fantastic project.
