Might Delete Later by J Cole

Surprise! A local man drops a rushed and boring album after another man disses him and his friend! It’s honestly funny to see more people talk about the wack and boring diss song than the actual “album” itself. To be fair, there isn’t much to say to be honest. You can say what you wanna say about Drake right now but I would rather hear a response from him right now than a guy who was barely mentioned in Kendrick’s verse and who also can’t make a good diss song. Drake's diss songs are usually good (even tho most of them are always Chubb's life stories told through Drake's voice and eyes), but Cole’s doesn’t have the heart, spirit, mind, and anger for this shit. Am I calling the man soft? Absolutely. He’s sound like a school principal lecturing kids.

“7 Minute Drill” is the title of the “diss” track and you can tell Cole didn’t want to diss Kendrick, at all. The beat is horrible, sounds like of one them beats that Cassidy made, the second half is a Conductor Williams leftover that should’ve been left in the vault. The only highlight of this whole song is Cole talking about Kendrick’s whole catalog and how people felt about “TPAB” and “Mr. Morale”. It’s a boring topic that many on Hip-Hop Twitter talk about every other day and this was honestly the best he came up with. Like what the fuck? You could’ve dug some dirt on Kendrick but instead, he just sounds like your average white guy with a black rapper or Sherk profile talking about an artist catalog or plugging some underground rappers music. This shit sucks, I don’t who going to be gassing this up, but I’m happy to see no one isn’t. Just sounds a like a dude who got hurt and was in his feelings than him being pissed at an old friend over some boring shit to be quite honest.

Like yeah, “Mr.Morale” was a conflicting album when he came out but over time I feel like it’s starting to get praise for basically being a therapy session for a big artist. Calling “TPAB” trash is even more funny and stupid cause I know we were gassing that shit up back then for being different and groundbreaking for it’s time for a big rapper to do those sounds. You motherfuckers were dead-ass singing “WE GON BE ALRIGHT” at rallies not long ago. “DAMN,” I can understand not liking that, sure. I just hate revisionist history. What makes this even funnier to me is that those whole bars about Kendrick's recent albums can apply to him. “2014 FHD” was a big record but hasn’t aged quite well. “4YEO” was him trying to be his own “TPAB” and that shit was a snoozefest. We got “KOD” which is just him crying about rappers doing drugs, a bad attempt on a alter ego, and some incel parasocial relationship track. That album made me realized he’s just not that guy. “Born Sinner” another snoozer, and “The Off Season” went diamond in the warehouses and sports games soundtracks and was forgettable. I think Cole is a good rapper but folks putting him up there with Drake, who I have a bipolar relationship with his music, and Kendrick is laughable. Thug and Future have done way more with the current sound and way better music than Cole in the past decade.

So I guess I can move along about my thoughts on Cole itself and talk about this “Album” or “mixtape” he dropped, to be honest, no one is talking about it…..which honestly I can see why. This is a fucking boring album. Another? yes…Surprise! Another boring J.Cole project! This could’ve been decent, the teaser tracks were cool but man you can tell this shit was rushed cause of the Kendrick verse. It’s like me trying to rush this review out or a college kid trying to finish a 1000-word essay by 1 am and it's 12:34 am on the clock and he only got 400 words left. One thing I do have to say, and I’m glad it’s being brought up. WHAT WAS THE REASON TO DO THAT TRANSPHOBIC LINE, AND WHY DID YOU DO IT? This also ties back to “Mr. Morale”, when K Dot did that track, yeah it was wild to hear him say the F word but the song was about growth and accepting people for who they want to be cause you loved that person at the end of the day, Cole was just being an asshole, classless, distasteful, and corny as fuck. It wasn’t a clever bar at all! He’s been known to do this in the past so while it’s not shocking, it just proves he’s a big fucking loser.

Anyway, Like I said, this album is boring. I think the intro track is pretty cool, It’s nice to hear Young Dro again in a brief cameo and Gucci Mane doing his version of a Gil Scott-Heron poem. Cam’ron leaving his sports studio and giving a solid verse on “Ready ‘24”, the sample is kinda lazy, I am a sucker for chipmunk vocal samples as an older man my age so. Speaking of samples, why does Cole know about Meat Canyon? he samples like a skit from them “Hunting Wabbitz”. Central Cee's verse was ok on the song he was on but I feel like he didn’t fit at all to me, I don’t know why. That’s about all the nice things I can say about this. The rest of the album just feels like nothing, I had a blank stare listening to this and felt nothing. Production is not that good, the bars on this range from bad to cringe, nothing just stood out to me. Didn’t have that like “WHOA SHIT!” moment at all. Also, Why the hell did he do a shitty upbeat dance track?

Overall, Cole can rap but he’s not engaging, and that’s always been my main issue with his whole career. Maybe he should’ve taken the advice of the album title and erased this off the internet. This is just a bland burger you get from the gas station with your free cup of water, just slop. Not even good slop you make at home right quick after a long day at work. This is definitely an album will came and went and be forgotten about by next week. He has to come through with the long-delayed “The Fall Off” album cause he proved to the haters that the meme that his music is Nyquil and “Shit you play before you fall asleep to” were right . This is the audio equivalent this of what they have been saying for years now.
